Health + Innovation

Shaping the next generation of health leaders

The Health + Innovation track (formerly Health + Tech) is an immersive undergraduate learning experience that inspires students to be innovators for social good. Students engage in experiential, team-based learning focused on creating digital technology solutions for public health challenges reaching populations that are often excluded from the digital economy. Through project-based curriculum and co-curricular activities, fellows work to address real-world public health challenges by engaging with communities to understand needs and working with industry to develop viable solutions.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Registered student at UC Berkeley
  • Rising junior or rising senior (sophomore or junior standing when applying) with a passion for health, wellness, social impact, design, and/or technology

Transfer student applications are now open for the 2024-25 academic year! Applications are due Saturday, August 3, 2024 and we are accepting applications from incoming transfer juniors and seniors.

Partner Organization: Center for New Media at UC Berkeley
Baloo developed novel methods to leverage AR/VR to reduce anxiety for young children who have cancer. This team collaborated within a larger team to design and develop a virtual experience that pediatric patients can engage with while they are in the hospital.

BrainWalk: Neuro Test Tech Toolkit for Non-specialized Clinics

BrainWalk worked to improve the classic “Neuro Test” by integrating a state-of-the-art technology toolkit that can be used by nurses and generalists at non-neurology clinics to detect early signs of these disorders.

GAIT: Tech to Support Healthy Gait for Older Adults
Partner Organization: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC Berkeley
Our product was a wearable hardware device with an accompanying mobile application that encourages healthy gait in older adults using cognitive user engagement and providing feedback to the customer.

Since our Health + Innovation track was launched in 2016, we have worked with a broad range of organizations that includes tech start-ups, healthcare delivery organizations and community service organizations, such as: Bitmark, Aging 2.0; Dignity Health, Kaiser Permanente Innovations Lab; VA – National Center for PTSD, Veteran Experience Office and SF and Palo Alto VA Medical Centers; SF Tech Council; First 5 Alameda County; Alameda County Public Health Department; HopeLab; YTH; Blue Goji; Best Babies Zone; Planet Murple; Habitot Children’s Museum; Senior Center Without Walls; and Center for Elder Independence.
